• Title I Parental / Family Engagement Policy 2023-24

     

    Flying Hills School of the Arts has developed a written Title I parental involvement policy with input from Title I parents represented by the School Site Council and families in attendance at Title I meetings.  The policy is distributed to parents of Title I students each year.  The Title I Parent Involvement Policy is posted on the school website and sent home with students.  The policy describes the means for carrying out the following Title I parental involvement requirements [20 USC 6318 Section 1118(a)-(f) inclusive]. 

    (2.0) With approval from the local governing board, each Title I school shall jointly develop with, and distribute to, parents of Title I students a written Parental Involvement Policy, agreed upon by such parents and updated periodically to meet the changing needs of parents and the school. (2.0)

    Involvement of Parents in the Title I Program

    (2.1) The school-level policy shall describe the means for carrying out the requirements of subsections.

    (2.2)To involve parents in the Title I program at Flying Hills School of the Arts, the following practices have been established:

    1. Convene an annual meeting to inform parents of participating students of the requirements of Title I and their right to be involved.
      • The school convenes an annual meeting to inform parents of Title I students about Title I requirements and about the right of parents to be involved in the Title I program.

    2. Offer a flexible number of meetings.
      • The school offers a flexible number of meetings for Title I parents, such as meetings in the morning or evening.

    3. Involve parents of participating students, in an organized, ongoing, and timely way, in the planning, review, and improvement of its Title I programs and parental involvement policy.

      • Each year the school reaches out to parents to be involved with planning and reviewing improvement of Flying Hills School of the Arts’ Title 1 programs and parent involvement policy.

    4. Provide parents of participating students with timely information about Title I programs.
      • The school provides parents of Title I students with timely information about Title I programs through Title I Parent Meetings, School Site Council Meetings, English Language Advisory Committee meetings, phone notifications, and written notifications.

    5. Provide parents of participating students with an explanation of the curriculum, academic assessment, and proficiency levels students are expected to meet.
      • The school provides parents of Title I students with an explanation of the curriculum used at the school, the assessments used to measure student progress, and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet.  The school reviews curriculum and assessments during our Back to School Night, parent teacher meetings, School Site Council Meetings, English Language Advisory Committee meetings, and Title I meetings.
         
    6. Provide parents of participating students, if requested, with opportunities for regular meetings to participate in decisions relating to the education of their children and respond to any such suggestions as soon as practicably possible.
      • If requested by parents of Title I students, the school provides opportunities for regular meetings that allow the parents to participate in decisions relating to the education of their children.

    (2.3) Shared responsibilities for high student academic achievement. The school-parent compact shall be jointly developed with and distributed to parents of Title I students. The school-parent compact shall outline how parents, the entire school staff, and students will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement and describe the means by which the school and parents will build and develop a partnership to help children achieve the state content standards. 

    The Compact:

    1. Describes the school’s responsibility to provide high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment that enables students to meet the state standards.
    2. Describes the parents' responsibility to support their children’s learning.
    3. Addresses the importance of ongoing communication between parents and teachers, ensuring regular two-way, meaningful communication between family members and school staff, in a language that family members can understand. The communication shall include, at a minimum, annual conferences, reports on student progress, reasonable access to staff, opportunities to volunteer and participate in their child’s class, and observation of classroom activities.
    4. Each school year Flying Hills School of the Arts holds School Site Council Meetings to review and update the Title I Parent Involvement Policy and the Parent Compact.  We post the Title I slides including Parent Compact and Parent Involvement Policy on our website.

    (2.4) Building Capacity for Involvement. To build capacity for involvement of parents, each school and LEA shall:

    1. Assist parents in understanding academic content and achievement standards and assessments and how to monitor and improve the achievement of their children.

    2. Provide materials and training to help parents work with their children to improve their children’s achievement.

    3. Educate staff, with the assistance of parents, in the value of parent contributions and how to work with parents as equal partners.

    4. Coordinate and integrate parental involvement with other programs and conduct activities that encourage and support parents in more fully participating in the education of their children.

    5. Distribute information related to school and parent programs, meetings, and other activities to the parents of participating students in a format and, to the extent practicable, in a language parents understand.

    6. Provide such other reasonable support for parental involvement activities under this section as parents may request.

    (2.5) Accessibility. Each school and LEA shall provide full opportunities for the participation of parents with limited English proficiency, parents with disabilities, and parents of migratory students including providing information and school reports required under 20 U.S.C. Section 6311 in a format and, to the extent practicable, in a language such parents understand.

    1. Flying Hills School of the Arts consistently reaches out to parents for involvement in all aspects of the school by encouraging  participation in SSC, ELAC, Title I Parent Involvement meetings, school wide events such as Performances, Arts Festival, movie nights, back to school night, and parent conferences.  FHSA informs parents of these opportunities through the use of the school marquis, letters, fliers, all calls, and the school website.  

    **The policy must be updated periodically to meet changing needs of parents and the school. If the school has a process in place for involving parents in planning and designing the school’s programs, the school may use that process if it includes adequate representation of parents of Title I children.
